In the semifinals, ND faced Penn State, their toughest opponent yet in the College Football Playoffs. The Irish narrowly escaped thanks to a late interception thrown by PSU quarterback Drew Allar.

The Buckeyes had arguably the toughest road of any team to make it to the CFP Finals. In the first round, they drew the Tennessee Volunteers and dispatched them by a score of 42-17.

In the second round they had to play the Big Ten Champion Oregon Ducks, a then undefeated team that was ranked number one in the nation. The Buckeyes blew the doors off the Ducks 41-21.

In the semifinals, OSU faced the Texas Longhorns, a team that many online sportsbooks suggested would win it all before the CFP began. Ohio State won that contest 28-14.

Can Notre Dame’s run-heavy attack keep pace with Ohio State? Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman believes that will be the key to winning the game.

There are four weekends of college football remaining until those initial CFP rankings are dropped. Three major games are going down this Saturday, which will shape how those rankings are crafted in one month’s time.

Mississippi Bulldogs vs. LSU Tigers

Miss lost to Kentucky 20-17 two weekends ago. Only three SEC programs remain with undefeated in-conference records – LSU, the Texas A&M Aggies, and the newly top-ranked Texas Longhorns.

Preseason odds for betting on the College Football Playoffs suggest that at least five SEC teams could qualify, leaving plenty of room for one-loss teams like the Bulldogs and potentially LSU.

The latest line on the game favors Ole Miss on the road by 3 points.

The Cyclones are favored to win by a field goal in Morgantown.

Starting things off at noon is a battle of Atlantic Coast Conference rivals who crossed the Atlantic to play in Dublin, Ireland. Dating back to 1988, college football has experimented with games played in Ireland.

It was first known as the Emerald Classic and is now dubbed the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. This year, FSU will play the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, a team that the Seminoles haven’t gone up against since October of 2022.

The kickoff is set for Saturday at noon, and FSU is favored to best the Yellowjackets by 10.5 points at college football betting sites. Florida State is known for early season struggles, even during the best of times.

The Noles will start DJ Uiagalelei at quarterback, a journeyman who has had stints at Clemson and Oregon State. FSU needed an answer after Jordan Travis was drafted by the New York Jets, and all other potential starters entered the transfer portal.

The second game of opening Saturday kicks off at 8:00 PM, and the Southern Methodist University Mustangs are projected to roll the Nevada Wolf Pack in Reno, NV’s Mackay Stadium.

The Wolf Pack are expected to do well in the Mountain West this season but are forecasted for a 25-point whooping at home this weekend.

The Mustangs will play their first ACC opponent on Saturday, September 28th, when they invite FSU into Gerald J. Ford Stadium. There is a very good chance that both teams will be undefeated entering that contest, as neither faces any top-ranked programs between now and then.

Based on the preseason betting odds for the CFP National Championship, SMU isn’t expected to compete for a spot in the playoffs. Despite that outlook, both teams should be ranked in the top 25 come the 28th if neither has a loss on their record.

Of course, both of these contests are just a mere sampling of what’s coming up, as all programs will have a game in the books no later than August 31st.

Washington Huskies defeated Texas Longhorns in what has already become an instant classic, with Texas driving down the field in the game’s final seconds. While Texas had several opportunities to tie the game late in regulation, it ultimately resulted in a fourth and goal play, which a Washington defender broke up to end the game.

The Michigan Wolverines etched by the Alabama Crimson Tide in overtime after a late Wolverine touchdown that tied the game. In overtime, Michigan scored first with a touchdown scramble from the running back. Alabama then took the field, but the drive resulted in a fourth down sack that ended the game.

The Orange Bowl

We’re talking about this game first for two reasons. First, both Florida State and Georgia have built resumes deserving of placement in the 2023-24 College Football Playoffs, but the selecting body chose Texas instead.

The Seminoles are the first undefeated Power 5 conference champion to miss the CFP in the final year the Selection Committee will have to make a decision that matters. Following next season, the playoffs will expand to 12 teams.

Have a look at the current CFP rankings. Anyone listed ninth or beyond has no business competing for a College Football National Championship, and that’s the case most seasons. There will be no future uproar for a 2-loss, 13th-ranked team that was excluded.

The second reason we’re highlighting this contest is due to the 19.5-point spread. The Bulldogs are expected to blow out FSU because several of the best Seminoles players are sitting out the Orange Bowl to avoid risking injury in a game that doesn’t mean anything.

This entire scenario has been a disgrace to FSU fans, the Orange Bowl, and college football in general.

The Sugar Bowl

Alabama and Michigan are the top two teams favored to win it all at CFP betting sites. That means whoever wins the Sugar Bowl will be favored to beat the winner between Texas and Washington in the Rose Bowl.

The Wolverines are favored to win by two points on Monday.

The Rose Bowl

The Texas Longhorns are favored by four over the undefeated Pac-12 champions, the Washington Huskies. No team has managed to beat Michael Penix Jr. and the Huskies so far this season, and Texas has already proven fallable with their loss to Oklahoma.

Don’t be surprised to see Washington cover. The Huskies could win outright, but covering is the safer bet. When it comes to betting on the CFP National Championship, we wouldn’t lay any action on either of these teams winning the whole thing.

The Fiesta Bowl

Due to next year’s conference-friendly rules for CFP inclusion, seeing teams like the Liberty Flames competing for a championship could become the norm. The Oregon Ducks are favored by -16.5 over Liberty, and we don’t expect this game to be competitive.

The Cotton Bowl

This contest between Ohio State and Missouri will also be heavily impacted by several players opting out. This time it is the Buckeyes who will be relying on a few second-teamers, but they are still three-point favorites over the Tigers.

Outside of FSU and Georgia, OSU has the next-best argument for being included in the playoffs. They lost to the best team in the country on the road by six points on the final day of the regular season and finished 11-1.

The Peach Bowl

Penn State is favored by five against Ole Miss on Monday. The Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl feature teams that have no righteous claim to a CFP berth. Once again, this bowl game will feature several opt-outs, so tune in at your own risk.

Even though the Noles were down to their third-string quarterback, redshirt freshman Brock Glenn, they still beat the 14th-ranked Louisville Cardinals and covered the two-point spread offered at 18+ college football betting sites.

The win brings FSU to 13-0 overall and poised to enter the CFP as the third or fourth seed. The CFP Selection Committee saw things differently and opted to include the Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide as the third and fourth seeds.

There’s no doubt that both Texas and Alabama have put together a resume worthy of consideration by the committee.

What’s also without doubt is that the committee decided to inject speculation and personal bias into the selection process, projecting what might happen rather than basing decisions on what’s already been proven.

What’s additionally maddening is the forthcoming 12-team College Football Playoffs format that is being installed a season too late. If it were active this year, the committee may have left things alone and granted the Noles the three seed that they earned.

Why Florida State Should Have Made The CFP

We’ve already stated that an undefeated Power Five Conference champion has never missed the College Football Playoffs. For some reason, this carried less weight than the SEC Champion being included when both standards should have presided.

The outlier is clearly the Texas Longhorns. How does the 7th-ranked team climb to number 3 by beating the 22nd-best team in the country? It doesn’t happen unless the committee drastically changes its mind about something.

The Alabama win over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game started this ball rolling. Once it became clear that the SEC Champion would be a part of the four-team playoff, the fact that Alabama had lost to Texas became a problem.

The Longhorns beat the Crimson Tide by 10 at Bryant-Denney Stadium, so fairness would dictate that Texas would also make it as a one-loss team. The Texas loss to Oklahoma at home didn’t put enough of a dent in their resume to keep them out.

Keep in mind that FSU held Louisville to their lowest point total of the year when they only allowed six points in the ACC Championship Game. That defensive presence alone should have given committee members confidence that they could hang with the best of the SEC, Big Ten, and Pac-12.

Football is a team sport where the championship results should be decided on the field. NCAA Football has opted out of that logic and continues to operate under a playoff plan that isn’t corruption-proof.

It is the only major sport where non-players have any say as to how the championship will be decided, and that will continue after the 12-team format is installed.

Atlanta, Georgia’s Mercedes Benz Stadium will host the 2023-24 SEC Championship Game between the two-time defending National Champions, the Georgia Bulldogs, against Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide.

The game is set for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff, and oddsmakers are siding with the Bulldogs for the win by just under a TD. If Alabama wins, they will throw a significant wrinkle into the CFP National Championship betting picture.

The winner is automatically qualified for the CFP, but if the loser is Georgia, it’ll be hard to keep a one-loss Bulldogs team out of the final four.
